“I love the smell of mosquito repellant,” said no one, ever. Let’s face it; even the soft-scented and organic types do not necessarily smell all that refreshing. Those considered most effective often have chemicals such as Deet or Picaridin that can often cause headaches or other allergic reactions in some. If you are like most parents, you are always on the lookout for the safest ways to protect your children. There is a solution. Homemade, do it yourself mosquito wipes. They are less sticky and smelly than store-bought sprays, are much safer, and use only natural ingredients. Keep reading to find out what you need and how to make these cost-saving and effective repellents.

Safe Yet Effective Ingredients

Mosquitoes hate certain smells. Using a blend of citrus, cinnamon, and castor oils, these homemade wipes combine specific essential oils unappealing to mosquitoes and other pests, including ticks. Be sure to follow the instructions correctly and use only the exact measurements listed below because many essential oils used alone are not safe for your skin and must be diluted. Lemon juice can also make your skin more prone to sunburn, so use with caution.

Supplies Needed:

  • 4 oz. distilled water
  • 2 oz. rubbing alcohol
  • 2 oz. castor oil
  • 2 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 15 drops cinnamon oil
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Medium size container with lid
  • Half a roll of paper towels
  • Serrated knife
  • Liquid measuring cup and measuring spoons
  • Mixing spoon
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Paper Towel Roll

Cut the paper towel roll in half. They need to fit into the container you chose, so cut them accordingly. Trim away any rough edges with scissors and pull the cardboard tube out of the center of the roll.

Mosquito Repellant Mix

Using the small bowl, combine distilled water, rubbing alcohol, castor oil, lemon juice, and cinnamon oil. Mix your combined substances with a spoon.

Allow Paper Towels to Soak Up the Moisture

Take your mixture and pour it into the container you set aside with the lid. Place the paper towels in the container and allow them to soak up the repellant mixture. Allow them to sit for at least 30 minutes to give them time to become saturated. Now, you have mosquito repellant wipes! When it’s time to use one, simply pull a towel out from the center of the roll and rub it on your skin.

A container with a lid will help prevent your wipes from drying out, but you can always refresh your wipes using more of the mixture you previously created.

Sometimes You Just Need to Call in the Professionals

Even with the most effective wipes and repellants, mosquitoes can be relentless. They are annoying and can cause harmful diseases to both our loved ones and pets. You need a treatment that will stop these mosquitoes dead in their tracks.
