There are two types of options when it comes to professional mosquito control services: spraying and fogging. They both work to protect you from the harmful bites of mosquitoes, but they each have their pros and cons. Today, we’ll discuss the differences between the two.
To be clear, we mean mosquito pesticide sprays – not mosquito repelling sprays, i.e., bug spray. Mosquito sprays are good if you have a small infestation or if you need precise targeting for certain areas. These products typically contain a concentrated pesticide. Sprays don’t require premixing or filling like foggers and misters. However, these products are not typically reusable, so they can become pricey if you have to treat your yard more than once.
Foggers are designed so that a small amount of pesticide can cover a large area. It’s similar to an essential oil diffuser you might have at home. A few drops of concentrated scent are mixed with water and turned into a mist to waft around the room. Thermal foggers are powered by propane or gasoline. They have a heating element that heats and vaporizes pesticides. Depending on the size of your yard, it will take five to 15 minutes to fully disperse over your yard. The downside of this method is due to the heat produces; you should not use this indoors.
As you may have deduced from the title, electric foggers, also known as cold or nonthermal foggers, don’t use heat. Instead, these machines use swirling nozzles to separate the pesticide, vaporizing it as high-powered air pressure forces the pesticide out. Electric foggers are safe for both outdoor or indoor use, and some even have a handle or backpack straps so you can move them around easily.
Foggers are made for broad coverage, which is good if you have a large yard. Typically, you can treat your entire backyard in an hour or less, and you don’t have to walk around with a sprayer. The fogger will do the legwork for you. If you have a powerful enough fogger, you can easily reach up to 30,000 square feet. Sprayers, on the other hand, typically have a range of 500 – 5,000 square feet. They’re better for targeted applications of nesting areas.
There are dozens of choices when it comes to choosing active ingredients for your pesticides. To name a few: sodium lauryl sulfate, lambda-cyhalothrin, gamma-cyhalothrin, permethrin, and even essential oils like peppermint, lemongrass, citronella, and cedar oil.
Mosquito foggers take less time because you can set them up and walk away while they work. Sprayers need old-fashioned elbow grease to get the job done. With everything else you’ve got on your plate, you may not have the time to cover your yard manually.
The most important thing to keep in mind when considering mosquito control for your yard is safety. Many people don’t have experience handling the chemicals or equipment needed to protect their yard, leading to injuries. Many people also don’t have the time to read through all the labels on the products thoroughly. If misused, pesticides can create various health problems, including eye irritation, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, shortness of breath, and vomiting. You must wear gear to protect your eyes and breathing, plus long sleeve pants, shirts, and gloves. And even after spraying, you must make sure to avoid using the yard, as well as keeping pets and children away, while the mist or spray has a chance to settle.
